A good number of our clients and partners are nonprofit organizations and ministries. That means many of you are reporting to some sort of board of directors.

I believe one of the most challenging things you will have to do as a nonprofit leader is to effectively “manage up,” and work well with your board. As a nonprofit leader, it is critically important to set the right tone as early as possible, find a balance that will allow you to do your work, and productively collaborate with your board to move the mission of your organization forward.

In my twenty years of leading nonprofits I don’t know if I ever took the time to read or listen to a single resource that equipped me in knowing how to better lead and collaborate with my board. I’m not proud of that. In fact, it’s a huge regret of mine, because I’m certain that I missed out on some potential for more.

That’s why I’m really excited about this podcast, where we sat down and had a chat with "the board whisperer," Simone Joyaux. Simone began her career in the nonprofit sector in 1975, serving as the executive director of an arts center and arts council in Michigan. She served as chief development officer for Trinity Repertory Company from 1981–1988 and then became a full time consultant in January 1988.

She’s often described as one of the nonprofit sector’s most thoughtful, inspirational, and provocative leaders. She’s advised with a countless number of organizations and their boards, and has a tremendous amount of wisdom on how we can get more out of the boards we work with.

Overall, I believe this podcast will inspire you with new ideas and hopefully a new resolve to want to find more ways to collaborate with your board and ultimately make the bigger impact that you desire. And if that isn’t motivation enough, she’s a pretty spunky and fun lady to listen to—I’m certain you’ll enjoy her conversations as much as we did. Listen on our website or via iTunes.
